I saw this question on a “How Well Do You Know Your Partner?” quiz. I think I know my partner very well but I did not know his answer to this. Then I thought, I don’t know MY answer to this.
I think it is a fun and interesting question to ask and think about. It can tell you a lot about yourself and someone else.
(My husband thought it was way too serious and heavy a question to ask at 10:30 at night when we were trying to go to sleep though).
My husband and I later discussed our “Philosophy of Life.” For me it is something that is a little difficult to completely put into words.
I would say that my philosophy is something like:
- Just keep going
- Keep taking action
- Keep trying
- Keep showing up
- Persistence and consistency is key
The Woody Allen quote, “80% of life is showing up” comes to mind for me. A big part of my philosophy is to “just do it” and keep doing it even if it isn’t quite right or perfect. “Progress, not perfection” is another saying that I like. Doing something is way better than nothing.
Yes, I make mistakes and hopefully I will learn from them. I believe that if I keep showing up the majority of my actions will be much more important than the mistakes and missteps – with both people and achievements. For example, I may not be meditating quite right but at least I am doing it and hopefully I will continue to get better, if I keep at it.
This philosophy has allowed me to be kinder and gentler to myself than I used to be in my younger days. It helps me feel better when I am working out and not up to doing my usual or what I think I “should” be doing.
The older I get the more I see the transience of life. Everything is a phase. Having a child made this very real for me and taught me this at a new level because things change quickly with babies and children. Even though some of them do not feel quick at the time.
Everything keeps changing. The only thing we know for sure is that things will change – how you feel, your relationships, your knowledge, friends, everything. Embrace and accept this change especially when times are tough. Know that they will get better if you keep going.
I would love to hear other people’s philosophies.
I know we will all learn by hearing others. Please share and tell me what yours is. Did you already know your philosophy? Or was it something you had to think about?
